Grand Lake Entrance: Your Gateway to a Hidden Rocky Mountain Paradise

The best kept secret about Rocky Mountain National Park is the entrance at Grand Lake.  The only entrance on the west side of the park, the Grand Lake Entrance is indeed a beautiful and less crowded way to experience Rocky Mountain National Park. The great news is that the entrance is less than 35 miles from our house.  It is a full day – but we love taking a day trip into the park.

Here’s some more information about this entrance and the surrounding area:

Proximity to Grand Lake: As the name suggests, the entrance is very close to Grand Lake, a picturesque mountain town. Grand Lake is known for its stunning views, clear waters, and a range of recreational activities. It’s a great place to spend time before or after exploring the national park.

Charming Town of Grand Lake: Grand Lake is a charming town with a quaint atmosphere. It’s home to locally owned shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and ice cream shops. It’s the perfect place to explore if you’re looking for a taste of small-town mountain life.

Recreational Opportunities: The area around Grand Lake offers a variety of recreational activities. You can relax at the beach, go paddleboarding, paddle boating, or kayaking on Grand Lake itself. The natural beauty of the lake and its surroundings makes it an excellent spot for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Exploring the Park: On the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park, you can explore the headwaters of the Colorado River, look for wildlife like moose, and hike to interesting places like Lulu City, which was once a mining town. The Kawuneeche Visitor Center near the Grand Lake Entrance is a valuable resource for park information, maps, and recommendations.
  • Scenic Beauty: The west side of the park offers stunning vistas of the Rocky Mountains, providing plenty of opportunities for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

Overall, the Grand Lake Entrance and the surrounding town offer a peaceful and authentic Rocky Mountain experience, making it a hidden gem for those seeking a less crowded but equally beautiful gateway to the national park.
